LESSON 5: PROPERTIES OF LOGARITHMS

Now that we know what a logarithm is and what question it asks, how do they operate inside of the solving structures we are used to? In other words, how do they add, subtract, multiply and divide with each other? What part of PEMDAS do logarithms fall under? Check out the introduction video below, then grab your Cornell Notes sheet to use as you watch the Absorb presentation for lesson 5.

Introduction

SWBAT
  • Identify properties of logarithms in expressions

    • Side-by-Side (+)

    • On-Top (x)

    • In-a-Fraction (-)

  • Expand logarithmic expressions

  • Condense logarithmic expressions

  • Simplify logarithmic expressions

Absorb

Exponential Growth Presentation

  • Use your Cornell Notes to document important information, processes and/or questions you have.

Cornell Notes Template

  • Notes will be checked and scored for content at the beginning of class on February 8. Make sure to have any questions you have written down for clarification.

Gaming Activity

After completeing the Absorb and Do activities, you are now ready to compete in a logarithm trivia challenge! The trivia game contains 10 questions in order of increasing difficulty. You will have 3 minutes to complete each question. The faster you answer each question, the more points you win! You will only get one chance to answer each question. Incorrect answers receive 0 points, while correct answers are scored based on speed. Make sure to enter your name when prompted so your standings will be displayed proudly on the leaderboard when you are finished. You could of course use a pseudnoum (code name) if you don't want your true identity to be revealed. Follow the directions below to start the game. Good luck!

Summary

A logarithm follows the same properties as exponents (which we learned in Ch.6). Side-by-Side means Addidion, On-Top means Multiplication and In-A-Fraction means Subtraction. We use those properties to expand (Make bigger) and condense (make smaller). Students should be able to identify properties of logarithms. They should also be able to expand, condense and simplify logarithmic expressions.
